A unique if unassuming bit of stone: a book lies open on top of the tomb providing the passerby with the (very brief) story to l’Internationale, the lyrics of which Pottier wrote as a member of the commune in 1871.

Whether it’s the font or the stylistic elements of this unassuming tomb, or the more complex features of the cherub overseeing the passing of this young woman, this bit of stone (1916), a unique twist on the effigy theme, is positively striking. I cannot take my eyes off her left hand.
